Angels

Where did the Belief in Angels come from?

Beautiful Angel in Clouds
Beautiful Angel
The word Angel came from the Greek word 'Angelos' which means Messenger.
Angels are particularly characteristic of the great monotheistic faiths (Zoroastrianism, Judaism, Gnosticism, Christianity and Islam) But you can also find that the belief in Angels also pervades the non-monotheistic belief systems as well... Commonly known as Devas, Nature Spirits, Elementals... In Wicca, Paganism and most New Age or Metaphysical Spiritual belief systems you will find a belief in Angels..

Zoroastrian Angel picture
Zoroastrain Angel
Angels first emerged in Zorostrianism:
Zoroastrianism is the ancient, pre-Islamic religion of Persia (i.e. modern-day Iran). Zoroaster's ideas led to a formal religion bearing his name by about the 6th century BCE and have influenced other later religions including Judaism, Gnosticism, Christianity and Islam...These religions were all influenced by Zoroastrianism, and Angels are but one part of Zoroastrianism's legacy to its sister/brother religions, Judaism, Gnosticism, Christianity and Islam.

Angels in Judaism:
The Jewish religion is a complex tradition that has experienced a number of important transformations over the millenia. While most accounts of Angel history attribute Zoroastrianism as the first religion to have True Angels, attendant Spiritual Beings served Yahweh from the first biblical narratives, long before Persian religious ideas began to exercise an influence on Judaism.
As a result of several centuries of Persian control of the Middle East, Jews were brought into contact with Zoroastrian religious ideas. Earlier Hebrews had not postulated an Evil counter-divinity or devil opposed to Yahweh. In addition to the notion of an ongoing spiritual warfare between good and evil, Judaism also adopted the idea of a final judgement and resurrection of the dead at the end of time.
Beyond the Hebrew Bible, a number of important bodies of Jewish religious literature further developed notions about Angels. The most important of these are the Talmud. While attempting to tone down what they viewed as an unhealthy overemphasis on Angels, the Talmudic Rabbis simultaneously recognized such pot-biblical innovations as the division between Angels of Peace and Evil Angels. The Zohar contains much the same information, although it is filled with mystical speculations.

Angels in Christianity:

Christianity inherited its Angels from Judaism. Many of the beliefs of Angelic representation was established during the Medieval period. The belief and worship of Angels became very pervasive within the Christian religion that the Church councils worried that devotion to Angels was eclipsing devotion to God. Medieval Christian Angelology moved in two directions. Two Angelological traditions developed.
The first drew upon the extensive Angel lore in the Book of Enoch. It was characterized by a focus on the traits of specific Angels, both good and evil.
The second tradition was marked by philosophical reflections on such issues as whether or not Angels have bodies and functions of the various choirs of Angelic Hierarchy as laid out by Dionysius. The systematic treatment of Angels in Aquina's 'Summa Theologiae' is representative of this latter tradition.

Angels are regualary mentioned in the Koran
Angels in Islam:
Islam was founded in Arabia by the Prophet Muhammad in the year 622 A.D. Mala'ika is the Islamic term for Angel, and like the Greek word 'Angelos' it means Messenger.
Angels are regularly mentioned in the Islamic Holy Book, The Koran. Some, such as Djibril (Gabriel) and Mikhail (Michael) are also found in Judaism and Christianity. Djibril and Mikhail are two of four important Muslim Archangels. The other two are Izra'il and Israfil. Djibril was the Archangel that originally dictated the Koran to the Prophet Muhammad.

Angels also appear in non-monotheistic religions. In the Hindu/Buddhist Spiritual Beliefs we find Spirits/Demi-Gods... Such as the Devas,

Devas in Hinduism picture
Hinduism Devas
Angels/Devas in Hinduism:
Deva is the Sanskrit word for Deity. Its related feminine term is Devi.
Devas, in Hinduism, are celestial beings that control forces of nature such as fire, air, wind, etc. They are not to be confused with the One and the only Supreme one God or His personal form, Saguna Brahman which can be visualized as Vishnu or Shiva.
In modern Hinduism, it can be loosely interpreted as any benevolent supernatural being. The Devas in Hinduism, also called Suras, are often juxtaposed to the Asuras, their half brothers.Devas are also the maintainers of the realms as ordained by the Trimurti. They are often warring with their equally powerful counterparts, the Asuras.
The Vedas, the earliest comprehensive literature, contain mantras for pleasing the devas to obtain blessings. The Rig Veda, the earliest of the four, enumerates up to 33 devas.

Devas in Buddhism relate to Angels
Devas in Buddhism
Angels/Devas in Buddhism:

Although the word deva is generally translated "god" (or, very occasionally, "angel") in English, Buddhist devas differ from the "gods" and "angels" of most religions past and present in many important ways.
A Deva (Sanskrit and Pali) in Buddhism is one of many different types of non-human beings who share the characteristics of being more powerful, longer-lived, and, in general, living more contentedly than the average human being.
  • Buddhist devas aren't eternal. Their lives as devas began some time in the past when they died and were reborn.
  • Buddhist devas are not immortal. They live for very long but finite periods of time, ranging from thousands to (at least) billions of years. When they pass away, they are reborn as some other sort of being, perhaps a different type of deva, perhaps a human or something beyond comprehension.
  • Buddhist devas do not create or shape the world. They come into existence based upon their past karmas and they are as much subject to the natural laws of cause and effect as any other being in the universe. They also have no role in the periodic dissolution of worlds.
  • Buddhist devas are not incarnations of a few archetypal deities or manifestations of a god. Nor are they merely symbols. They are considered to be, like humans, distinct individuals with their own personalities and paths in life.
  • Buddhist devas are not omniscient. Their knowledge is inferior to that of a fully enlightened Buddha, and they especially lack awareness of beings in worlds higher than their own.
  • Buddhist devas are not omnipotent. Their powers tend to be limited to their own worlds, and they rarely intervene in human affairs. When they do, it is generally by way of quiet advice rather than by physical intervention.
  • Buddhist devas are not morally perfect. The devas of the worlds of the Rupadhatu do lack human passions and desires, but some of them are capable of ignorance, arrogance and pride. The devas of the lower worlds of the Kamadhatu experience the same kind of passions that humans do, including (in the lowest of these worlds), lust, jealousy, and anger. It is, indeed, their imperfections in the mental and moral realms that cause them to be reborn in these worlds.
  • Buddhist devas are not to be considered as equal to a Buddhist refuge. While some individuals among the devas may be beings of great moral authority and prestige and thus deserving of a high degree of respect (in some cases, even being enlightened practitioners of the Dharma), no deva can ultimately be taken as the way of escape from samsara or control one's rebirth. The highest honors are reserved to the Three Jewels of Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha.

~Hindus hold almost none of these points to be true about the devas. The Hindu view is that the devas are in nature very much akin to the gods or angels of other religions.~

In non-monotheistic religions we find also messenger Divinities such as those of the classical Greek and Roman pantheon as Eros, Hermes, and Nike. These latter Deities are particularly appropriate for comparison as they contributed iconographical to the Christian Angels.

Faeries compare to Angels
Faeries compare to Angels
Faeries and Nature Spirits:

Another class of Beings that invites comparison with Angels are Faeries...
Faeries are another kind of Nature Spirit that, under different names and guises, we find in every part of the world. Often pictured as small humanoid beings with wings, they present the appearance on mini-angels. Unlike Angels, however, Faeries have always had a mixed relationship with humanity. As Nature Spirits concerned with the natural processes, they do not normally seek out human contact. When they take a liking to someone, they will help that person in various ways. They have always been pictured as mischievous beings who enjoy playing pranks on people. Because the Church did not have room in its world view for morally neutral spiritual beings who were neither good nor evil, Faeries were rejected as agents of Satan. Traditional religious authorities were responsible for driving a wedge between Faeries and Angels, and the rather obvious resemblance between them has been obscured ever since...

Angels in Modern Belief Systems:

In the West, Angels began a gradual decline in importance in the wake of the rise of modern science in the early modern period. They physical sciences undermined belief in the concrete reality of heaven, hell, Angels and Demons...Carl Jung, for instance, postulated the existence of a collective unconscious that every human being inherits. Using this approach, it is possible to acknowledge demons, spirits and angels as the personifications of the unconscious... rather that as literal spiritual beings...

The notion of Angels as actual, literal Beings came back into fashion within two distinct subcultures... Modern Evangelical Protestantism and the contemporary metaphysical /New Age subculture...

Evangelical:

Archangel Gabriel Blowing His Horn
Evangelical authors agree with the theory that the Christian God created Angels...Countless thousands of them. They believe that Angels were created some time before the physical universe. A war in heaven resulted in the expulsion of Satan and his Angels. Humans were created later, in their Gods image, a little lower in status than the Angels. They regard Angels as messengers of the word of their God. The 'Good' Angels serve their God as well as his people, whereas the 'Evil' Angels serve Satan and his purposes.

The novelist, Frank E. Peretti features prominently in their beliefs. The action in these novels moves back and forth between two interacting leverls; while Angels and Devils fight in the Spiritual Realm, Peretti's human heroes do battle with New Agers, Witches, Psychologists, Secular education advocates and other grouped viewed by conservative Christians as being under Demonic influences... They believe that their prayers provide power and protection for warrior Angels, who are then empowered to win battles against supernatural demons.

Metaphysical / New Age:

The belief in Angels began with a nineteenth-centurty occult movement, Theosophy
Occult belief in Angels/Devas
The belief in Angels began with a nineteenth-century occult movement, Theosophy.
While the term Theosophy has more than one meaning, in contemporary usage it refers to the particular synthesis of ideas that manifested in the Theosophical Society that was founded in New York in 1875.
Theosophy postulates a complex view of the Universe, within which humanities origins, evolution and ultimate destiny are delineated in some detail. Like the ancient Gnostic's, Theosophists populate the cosmos with innumerable spiritual entities... A significant class of these entities are what Theosophists call Devas...
Within Theosophy Devas are the rough equivalent of Angels...In particular, Devas oversee Natural Forces and are responsible for building up forms on inner planes as well as on the physical plane.
Devas became part of the more general metaphysical subculture in the early 1970's when a movement known as Findhorn was being featured in New Age periodicals.

Angel Correspondences:

Angel Color Correspondences:

Color has long been one attribute strongly associated with Angelic visions. Color is actually the saturation and the brightness of reflected light upon any object, therefor the Angelic vision can portray many color sensations through the human eye. Artists over the centuries have tried to accentuate the visual by adding luminous color surrounding the Angel figure or including multi-hued wings and halos.
There have been color associations assigned to various ranks of Angels.
